Recap: 80th ECCE General Meeting – Celebrating 40 Years of Civil Engineering Excellence! 🎉

The European Council of Civil Engineers (ECCE) successfully held its 80th General Meeting from 20–22 March 2025 in Funchal, Madeira, Portugal, hosted by the Ordem dos Engenheiros (OEP). The meeting gathered representatives from 22 ECCE member countries, associate members, past and honorary presidents, and distinguished guests, marking an important milestone—ECCE's 40th Anniversary.

This commemorative event featured strategic discussions, progress updates on ECCE initiatives, and celebratory moments that reflected on four decades of achievements in civil engineering across Europe.

 

 

Highlights from the 80th ECCE General Meeting

  • Opening Ceremony: Welcome addresses by ECCE President Platonas Stylianou, OEP President Fernando de Almeida Santos, and local authorities set the tone for a forward-looking and collaborative gathering.

  • Governance and Administration: Financial and activity reports were presented and approved, reinforcing ECCE's commitment to transparency and strategic planning.

  • Membership News: ECCE welcomed back CICCP (Colegio de Ingenieros de Caminos, Canales y Puertos) from Spain as an Associate Member—one of ECCE's founding members.

  • Strategic Developments:

    • Updates on the Common Training Framework (CTF) and review of the ECCE Articles of Association.
    • Presentation of ECCE's new brand identity and progress on the new ECCE website.
    • Launch of a Position Paper on AI in Civil Engineering under the AIDE Initiative.
    • Signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with AECEF.
  • Key Publications:

    • Preview of the updated "Civil Engineering Profession in Europe" e-book.
    • Launch of the commemorative publication "40 Years of ECCE History".
  • Round Table Discussion: Past and current ECCE leaders addressed pressing issues in the profession—from climate change and resilience to education and the role of civil engineers in society.

  • 40th Anniversary Celebration: Past ECCE Presidents were honoured for their invaluable contributions during a special award ceremony.

  • Technical Visit: Delegates explored Madeira's iconic Levadas and visited the Serra d'Água Hydroelectric Power Station, followed by a cultural reception at the Madeira Botanical Garden.
