Curriculum Vitae
Humberto Varum is since 2014 full professor at the Civil Engineering Department of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), Portugal. Previously and since 1997, he developed his teaching and research activity at the Civil Engineering Department of the University of Aveiro, Portugal. At the University of Aveiro, he did his Aggregation Exams in 2011 and defended his PhD Thesis in Civil Engineering in 2003. Previously, he completed his Master's degree in Structures of Civil Engineering (1996) and his Degree in Civil Engineering (field of Structures, 1993) at FEUP.
Between 2010 and 2016, he was Honorary Lecturer at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering, University College of London (UCL), in London, United Kingdom. In 2012, he was professor of the Master in 'Evaluation Control and Reduction of Environmental Seismic Risk', at the University of Rome 'La Sapienza', Rome, Italy. Between 2016 and 2018, he was Visiting Professor at the College of Civil Engineering, Fuzhou University, in Fujian, China.
Since 2019, he is External Researcher of 'Grupo de Gestión de Riesgos de Desastres en Infraestructura Social y Vivienda de Bajo Costo' (GERDIS: Disaster Risk Management Group in Social Infrastructure and Low Cost Housing) at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP), in Lima, Peru. Since 2021, he is researcher at 'Laboratório de Reabilitação do Ambiente Construído' (LabRAC: Built Environment Rehabilitation Laboratory), at the University of Brasília (UnB), in Brazil.
From 2015 to 2023, he was a member of the Board of the 'Instituto da Construção' (IC: Construction Institute) of the University of Porto and President of the Board since 2019. Since December 2023, he has been President of the Board of the 'Instituto para a Construção Sustentável' (ICS: Institute for Sustainable Construction), which resulted from the merger of IC with two other UP technological transfer institutes.
Since 2020, he has been Vice-President of the Board of Regents of FEUP (elected) and member of the Senate of the University of Porto.
He was director of the PhD programme in Civil Engineering at FEUP (2018-2023).
Between 2019 and 2022, he was a member of the FEUP Scientific Council.
Since 2014, he is an Integrated Member of CONSTRUCT research unit: 'Instituto de I&D de Estruturas e Construção' (Institute of R&D in Structures and Construction), and the Vice-Coordinator between 2016 and 2022.
He has been a member of the 'Ordem do Engenheiros' (OEP: Order of Engineers) at the College of Civil Engineering since 1995; senior member since 2006; and specialist in Structures since 2008.
Since 2022, he has been President (elected) of the National College of Civil Engineering of the Order of Engineers for the 2022-2025 term.
He has been a National Defence Auditor since 2022.
He is member of the Mexican Academy of Engineering since 2018.
Since 2023, he has been a member of the International Scientific Advisory Board at Brno University of Technology, in the Czech Republic. He was a member of the International Scientific Board (ISB) of the AdMaS Centre (Advanced Materials, Structures and Technologies) of the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Brno University of Technology, in the Czech Republic, from 2013 to 2019.
Since 2021, he has been National Delegate of the 'Asociación Latinoamericana de Control de Calidad, Patología y Recuperación de la Construcción' (ALCONPAT: Latin American Association of Quality Control, Pathology and of Construction Rehabilitation).
He was a grant-holder and temporary agent at the ELSA laboratory, Joint Research Centre, European Commission, in Italy, for three years (1998-2001), where he developed research on earthquake assessment and rehabilitation of existing structures. He has been Seconded National Expert to the European Commission in the period July 2009 to August 2010, at the Joint Research Centre.
He has working experience both in research and in industry, having worked at an international level in structural design and retrofit.
His research experience combines large-scale earthquake testing and non-linear analytical modelling of structural systems. In his teaching, he has specialised in the structural behaviour, seismic engineering, strength of materials and conservation of structures. His main research interests include: assessment, strengthening and repair of structures; structural health monitoring; structural testing and modelling; earthquake engineering; seismic risk, heritage construction rehabilitation; and seismic strengthening.
He is member of the National Committee of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) since 2009 and an Expert Member of the ICOMOS's International Scientific Committee of Earthen Architectural Heritage (ISCEAH) since 2011. He is member of the PROTERRA Iberian-American Network since 2012. Member of the Project Team 2 for the development of the 2nd generation of EN Eurocodes (SC8.T2 - material dependent sections of EN 1998-1). Member of the Technical Committee TC 274-TCE "Testing and characterization of earth-based building materials and elements" (RILEM). Member of the "Seismic" action group of fib's TG10.1, for the development of the Model Code 2020. Member of the IABSE Working Group 7 'Earthquake Resistant Structures' (Task Group 1.1). He is national delegate of the CICOP Net Confederation since 2012.
He has participated to post-earthquake field reconnaissance missions, in particular to L'Aquila (Italy, 2009), Lorca (Spain, 2011), Emilia-Romagna (Italy, 2012), Gorkha (Nepal, 2015) and Puebla (Mexico, 2017).
Coordinated or coordinates, and participated or participates in several national and international research projects, financed on a competitive basis by public funds through national or international agencies or by companies, including the European Commission, the Foundation for Science and Technology, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), in the United Kingdom, QREN, an Agência de Inovação and IAPMEI.
Supervised 36 doctoral theses and 18 post-doctoral researchers in the fields of behaviour characterisation of structures, seismic design, behaviour and seismic strengthening of building structures, and rehabilitation of historic buildings.
He is co-author of more than 600 publications in national and international conferences and journals in the fields of earthquake engineering and structural assessment and rehabilitation. Among these publications, around 250 articles stand out in international journals indexed in the ISI-Web of Knowledge or Scopus. It has an h-index of 45 in the Scopus database. He edited 9 books and several special issues of journals, national or international.
He is editor or co-editor and member of the Editorial or Scientific Committee of several international or national scientific journals, including: Construction and Building Materials (Elsevier), Journal of Structural Engineering (ASCE, American Society of Civil Engineers), Bulletin of Earthquake Engineering (Springer), Journal of Building Pathology and Rehabilitation (Springer) and International Journal of Masonry Research and Innovation (Inderscience).
He has been coordinator of the Scientific Committee of the Portuguese Journal of Structural Engineering (rpee: Revista Portuguesa de Engenharia de Estruturas) since 2016. He has been director of the Construção Magazine (Engenho e Media, Publindústria) since 2021.
In 2023, he received the Municipal Merit Medal, awarded by the Estarreja City Council.
